🐉 What Is Rumensin For Cattle
Monensin, commonly referred to by its brand name, Rumensin, is an ionophore which targets gram-positive bacteria in the rumen. By reducing the gram-positive bacteria, the gram-negative bacteria are allowed to thrive. This leads to a shift in volatile fatty acids in the rumen in the favor of propionate, which is more efficiently used by cattle.
Rumensin™ is a scientifically-proven rumen modifier that improves the health and performance of dairy cows. Rumensin™ Max has registered indications for increased milk protein production; as an aid in the reduction of bloat; and as an aid in the control of ketosis. Monensin medicated cattle and goat feeds are safe for use in cattle and goats only. Consumption by unapproved species may result in toxic reactions. Feeding undiluted or mixing errors resulting in high concentrations of monensin has been fatal to cattle and could be fatal to goats.
Rumensin is commonly used for feedlot cattle. Presumably, this is related to ancillary benefits on acidosis control and controlling intake on high-grain diets (much of the data on Rumensin has been collected at the University of Nebraska with finishing cattle and acidosis).
Rumensin is registered for improved weight gain and feed efficiency in cattle and sheep, improved reproductive performance in heifers and as an aid in the prevention of coccidiosis in cattle, sheep, goats and chickens.
